Introducing the JIEM Advisory Team
Hiroshi Ikeda
Acquired his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1965, after studying at the Division of Educational Psychology, Graduate School of Education, the University of Tokyo. Served for many years as a professor, and now Professor Emeritus at Rikkyo University, as a director of the JIEM and president of Zenken. He has also worked as a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, a Fulbright senior research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, as a visiting professor at the National Center for University Entrance Examinations and the Open University of Japan, and as the chief director of the Japan Association for Research on Testing. His expert fields are educational statistics, and psychological and educational measurement, areas in which he has become known as the leading figure in Japan on test theories and has been active internationally. His many publications include Research Methods in Behavioral Sciences, Methods of Psychological Research - Test 7 and 8 (University of Tokyo Press), Psychological Measurement and Learning Theory, New Methods of Test Construction, Test and Measurement, Survey Research and Measurement, and Modern Test Theories. His current research theme is the R&D in new evaluation methods through education using computers.
Ken Kanatani
Has taught for 32 years at Tokyo Gakugei University after completing the master’s program of the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology of the University of Tokyo, and the doctoral course of the university’s Graduate School of Education, and the doctoral course of Stanford University in the US. Became project professor at Tokyo Gakugei University in 2012. His field of expertise is English language education, and his research themes cover the changes over time in junior high school students Ecomprehension of phrases, the development of high school lesson structures and so on. Has also served as President of the Japan Society of English Language Education (JASELE), and member of the Foreign Language Special Committee of the Central Council of Education, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Lectured in NHK’s “TV English Conversation I Efor three years from 1986, and supervised NHK’s “Basic English 2 Eradio programs for two years since 1994. His publications include A Prescription for Better English Teaching, (Taishukan Publishing Co., Ltd., 2002), Giving Japanese Translation First: An Attempt for Better High School Teaching of English (Sanseido publishing Co., Ltd., 2004), English Education Fever (Kenkyusha Co., Ltd. , 2008), You can Pass your University Exam with Just Authorized Text Books (Taishukan Publishing Co., Ltd., 2009), and Change High School English Teaching! (ALC press Inc., 2011).
Kazuo Shigemasu
Acquired his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in the US in 1974, after studying educational psychology at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo. Has worked as a professor at the Faculty of Education, Tohoku University, School of Engineering and Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo. Currently teaches as a professor at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Teikyo University, as Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, and as a visiting professor at the National Center for University Entrance Examinations. Has served as the president of the Japanese Psychological Association, as the chair of the organizing committee of International Meeting of Psychometric Society. Currently serving as the chair of the organizing committee for the International Congress of Psychology 2016, as a member of the Executive Committee of International Union of Psychological Science and as vice-president of the Japan Association for Research on Testing. His fields of expertise include Bayesian statistics, decision-making and personality theory. His publications include Basic Bayesian Statistics (University of Tokyo Press), Cognitive Statistics in Decision-Making (Asakura Publishing Co., Ltd.), and A Commentary on Bayesian Networks (co-authored, published by Baifukan Co., Ltd.).
Yoshiro Tanaka
Executive Assistant to the Chancellor of J. F. Oberlin University, and director of both the university’s Comprehensive Research Organization and Institute for Research on Higher Education. Professor at the University’s Graduate School of Higher Education Administration. Received his doctor’s degree from UCLA in 1985, and holds a Ph.D. (Pedagogy). Participated in the establishment of J. F. Oberlin University’s College of International Studies in 1989. Subsequently taught as graduate school professor and director of Department of Education at Tamagawa University, and from 2005 as director of and professor at J. F. Oberlin University’s Graduate School and from 2007 as director of and professor at its Comprehensive Research Organization. Served as director of the Institute for Research on Higher Education from 2011, and as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor since 2012. Expert areas include comparative and international higher education. He has researched mainly worldwide university entrance examinations and curriculum analysis, development, management and evaluation issues. Visiting professor at the National Center for University Entrance Examinations EEntrant Selection Research Organization, and at the Open University of Japan’s Graduate School. Director of the International Education Center, director of Obirin Gakuen Foundation of America (OGFA), international advisor on educational evaluation to the Joint Research Center on American Universities, international adviser to UCLA=CRESST, UCLA International Educational Research and Development Center, and project adviser to the East-West Center. Recent publications include Co-author and editor, “Access, Equity, and Capacity in Asia Pacific Higher Education (International and Development Education) E, Palgrave Macmillan (2011).
Eiji Muraki
After graduating from Psychology Course, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Waseda University in 1970, he acquired his Ph.D. in measurements, evaluation and statistical analysis programs from the University of Chicago in 1982. After graduating, he worked on the development of psychological statistic models used in educational assessments such as the California Education Measurement Project at the National Opinion Research Center (NORC). As a senior researcher, he worked on statistics and quantitative psychological research at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) from 1989, and worked at ACT in 2001, and has since 2002 been professor at the Graduate School of Educational Informatics Research Division, Tohoku University. His main field of research is quantitative psychology and the development of methods used in educational measurements. He has published many scientific papers, and developed a computer program used as the standard software in educational assessment. Has made an enthusiastic contribution to the development of quantitative psychology in Japan and the U.S. through various academic society activities.
Hirohiko Yoshida
Spent his junior and high school years in Kobe, and after graduating from the School of Law, Waseda University in 1976 he was involved in running a private sector education company dealing with returnees and Internet education. Took part in the founding in 1997 of the Supporting Union for Practical-use of Educational Resources, which became the first educational NPO to be recognized by the Economic Planning Agency in 1999. Served as nationwide chairperson of the NPO. Advocating ”after-school educational reform Ehe has with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the educational committees expanded social education activities throughout Japan, set up many educational projects, and works on the restoration of regional educational ability. Has since 2003 served as the director of J-SHINE, an NPO involved in the accreditation of elementary school English language teachers, where he provides guidance regarding the reform of English language teaching.
