- Develop well-balanced skills necessary for EIKEN tests -
Online English learning program “Study Gear for EIKEN”
(for EIKEN Grade 2 – Grade 5) Service officially launched

2014.04.28

The Eiken Foundation of Japan, a public-interest incorporated foundation (Chairman: Koichi Matsukawa, Location: Shinjuku-ku Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as “Eiken Foundation”) will officially launch “Study Gear for EIKEN”, a new online-based e-learning service to prepare for the EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency (hereinafter “EIKEN”) on the English learning portal site “ei-navi”, which they manage jointly with the Japan Institute for Educational Measurement, Inc. (President and CEO: Junichi Takamura, Location: Minato-ku Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as “JIEM”).

“Study Gear for EIKEN” is an online learning program developed jointly by the EIKEN Foundation and JIEM which contains “all necessary learning items in one place” to prepare learners for Stage 1 (written and listening tests) of EIKEN from Grades 2 to 5. The latest system creates an optimized study plan for each learner based on their English level, learning style, and learning period which varies for each learner. By studying according to the plan in the areas of English idioms, grammar, listening, and reading, learners can naturally acquire the skills necessary for EIKEN, which is an ideal way of preparing for the test. Each study unit is as short as about 5 minutes, allowing younger children to study at their own pace.

“Study Gear for EIKEN” first started to offer the service for Grade 2, Grade Pre-2, and Grade 3 at the end of July last year. Since then, this learning program, which is set based on the level, weaknesses, and the progress of each learner, has received good reviews from the users such as “I can study only what’s necessary efficiently without wasting time thinking what I need” and “I can study without feeling overwhelmed because I can study a little bit at a time when it’s convenient”.

As shown above, “Study Gear for EIKEN” now covers all the learning items for Grades from 2 to 5, but Grades 1 and Pre-1 not included. We have made a basic plan so that more learners will be able to experience each of these useful programs and will offer the first free trial, running until July 31, 2014, to those who applied for the summer session (Test dates: Main test sites June 8 (Sun), Group test sites June 6 (Fri), 7 (Sat), 8 (Sun), Application period: ~May 16 (Fri)). Please refer to https://www.eiken.or.jp/studygear_basic/ for details. We are planning to continuously provide a similar service as part of our support for English learners in the future.

The Eiken Foundation recognizes the importance of the computerization of education and has developed the basis for ICT-related businesses from an early stage. As part of this, in 2011 they established the English learning portal site “ei-navi” https://www.ei-navi.jp/ jointly with JIEM , which provides a learning service that integrates “measurement  diagnosis  learning” as a learning cycle, The Eiken Foundation has also released a string of services applying ICT including “EIKEN CBT”, “NEW HORIZON Mirumiru Master”, and “Study Gear for EIKEN”, which has just been released.

Both the Eiken Foundation and JIEM will continue to expand the basis for ICT-related businesses and contribute to the further improvement of not only tests but also the English proficiency of as many English learners all over Japan as possible utilizing our knowledge and know-how that each of us has developed.
